A Look Back on Eighteen Years In the Same Boat, With More to Come!

Way back in 1999 — that’s the year when the Dow first closed above 10,000, if you’re keeping score — Farwell Forrest and I started writing a weekly column for what was then the newly launched canoeing and kayaking website Paddling.net. We called our column In the Same Boat, and we continued to write for Paddling.net for18 years: some 900 columns in all. But nothing lasts forever. Paddling.net became Paddling.com in 2016, and In the Same Boat upped anchor not long afterward. This is her new berth.

Make no mistake. We’ll be back in the same boat soon, with a new column every week, and we look forward to renewing acquaintances with our longtime readers. In the meantime, though, we’ve something to offer both new visitors and old hands alike: a comprehensive collection of our earlier columns. We’ll be uploading more columns from our backlist each week until we’ve put all 900-odd online, and as each quarterly chapter in what we’ve started to think of as In the Same Boat: The Collector’s Edition goes online, we’ll add a link to the list below.

Thanks for stopping by — and happy reading!
